The Fight Against Spamtards, pt. 1

2 March 201016:23

Last time round, I occasionally got some spam emails sent to me from the Contact page of the site.  This time round, however, I’m planning revenge! …well, sort of… more prevention than revenge.

reCAPTCHA.  That’s the tool I’m using.  You’ve no doubt seen it or its predecessor around on many websites.  It’s basically a small script that gives you two words in a graphical form which you have to enter as text to prove you’re human.  The theory being that a computer program (i.e., spambot) cannot easily ‘read’ what the words in the image say, and therefore isn’t a human.  Although, let’s face it, even us humans struggle sometimes with these things!

You’ll see reCAPTCHA around on the comment form on all my posts already, with the Contact page to follow suit soon.

Of course, being human doesn’t mean you won’t spam me… so if you send me spam now, it’s clearly deliberate, which means I might “accidentally” post your email/IP address in plain text for all the spambots in the world to see :)
